SPECIAL PROJECTS GROUP
Special Projects Group (SPG) is the Department responsible for Major Construction Projects on Campus. The Department oversees a wide range of activities including, but not limited to the following:
- Planning
- Design
- Construction
- Contract Administration
- Financial Tracking and Control
- Payment Authorization
- Reporting to the President & Various Committees (i.e., Project Status and Progress)
Special Projects Group is the liaison with consulting design teams, construction managers and contractors in various phases of the projects. The department collaborates and works closely with various entities on campus. Other departments on campus offer their input and involvement during the different phases of the projects. Collaborating efforts are performed with the following departments:

- Environment & Site Services
- Public Safety
- Division of Chief Information Officer
- Environment, Health and Safety
- Chief of Staff
- Institute Advancement
- Risk Management
- Purchasing

- Government & Community Relations
The Special Projects Group is in charge of the $255 million capital construction projects initiative, a part of the Rensselaer Plan, approved by the Board of Trustees in December 2001 and consisting of the following :
- Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies Research Building - completed September, 2004
- Experimental Media & Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) - scheduled to open 2008
- Parking Garage - completed January, 2004
- Infrastructure - completed July, 2004
- Substation
- Chiller Plant
- Streetscape Improvement
- Underground Utilities
- Boiler House - completed December, 2004
New project currently in planning include:
- Research Quad Infrastructure and Landscaping
- EMPAC Streetscapes
SPG also works closely with the City of Troy for coordination of all Planning Commission reviews and approvals, permits and SEQR requirements and mitigations.
SPG is involved in the quarterly Public Information Meeting, updating surrounding neighbors and businesses on the various projects status, upcoming planned activities and open discussion on community concerns and comments.
