Machine Upgrades

CIS' Server Support Services group has recently made several hardware-related updates to some machines on campus.

Sun UltraSPARCs Installed in VCC Public Access Area

The group recently installed three new Sun UltraSPARCs in the northwest corner of the VCC's public access area, replacing three older IPX models -- having only 200MB of disk space and 24MB of memory -- with the UltraSPARC model 140s. As a great improvement over their predecessors, these new machines, which run the Solaris 2.5 operating system, are 143MHz machines having two gigabytes of disk space and 64MB of memory.

We think users will find that SunŐs Ultra workstations combine the best innovations in computing: UltraSPARC processors, on-chip multimedia, and a crossbar-switched interconnect for multiple simultaneous data transfers. Known as "UltraComputing (TM)", the technology combines exceptional processor speed, high-bandwidth networking, and accelerated graphics with outstanding application performance.

VCC North, Sage 3101 Machines Get Additional Memory

The server support group also recently put additional memory in the IBM 250 workstations in VCC North and the IBM 230 workstations in Sage 3101, bringing both sets of machines from 32MB to 64MB of memory. These recent upgrades should have a marked improvement in performance on these machines, especially when running memory-intensive software packages like Maple, Pro/ENGINEER, and X applications.
