Version 3.6 of trn News Reader Available on RCS

Version 3.6 of trn -- or Threaded RN, a newsreader that uses an article's references to order the discussions in a reply-ordered sequence called "threads" -- is now available on all RCS platforms. trn not only makes following the discussions easier by having the replies associated with their parent articles, but also makes it easy to back-track and (re-)read a specific discussion from the beginning. The trn news reader also provides a visual representation of the current thread in the upper right corner of the header, which will give you a feel for how the discussion is going and how the current article relates to the last one you read.

To run trn 3.6, enter the following commands from a UNIX prompt:

     	setup trn-new
	trn &

For help in using trn, refer to the man page on RCS by entering man trn at a UNIX prompt. You may also refer to the memo titled Usenet News, which includes information on reading news with trn, posting messages, etc. (You may access this memo either from the RCS directory /campus/docs/acs.memos, or through RPInfo by selecting ACS documentation from the ACS homepage.)

Version 3.6 of the trn news reader will become the system default on Wednesday, January 29, and you will no longer have to set it up.

You will still be able to access trn version 3.5 until February 28 by entering setup trn-old from a UNIX prompt before running the program.

If you have any further questions about using trn, please contact the consultants at the ACS Help Desk locations, or direct electronic mail to consult@rpi.edu.
