Version 4.7 of Netscape Communicator, a communication suite featuring built-in e-mail and news support, is now available on RCS. The latest version includes a number of bug fixes, as well as enhanced support for the java language. The package supports the latest HTML standards and layout tools.
This version of Netscape also includes IBM's techexplorer, a plug-in that makes it possible to easily publish or view mathematical and scientific material on the Web. techexplorer also enables Netscape to display documents written using a well-defined subset of TeX and LaTeX; if a filename has a ".tex" extension, Netscape will automatically use techexplorer to display it, including the mathematical expressions.
Netscape 4.7 became the default on Tuesday, Nov 9th, so you will no longer have to set it up. In addition, you will be able to start the Communicator portion of the package via the button on the RCS Applications menu.
You will still be able to access the old version, Netscape 4.5.1, until Thursday, December 9, by entering the command setup netscape-old from a UNIX prompt before running the program.
If you have any additional questions about using Netscape, please contact the ACS Help Desk consultants, or direct electronic mail to consult@rpi.edu.
Users may also access and print the HTML documentation files located in the RCS directory /campus/text/techeplorer/2.0/common/Documentation/Help. The best way to view this documentation is to start Netscape, and then specify the file /campus/text/techexplorer/2.0/common/Documentation/Help/DocToc.html in the Location: field at the top of the Netscape window. People who are interested in the development of techexplorer can also visit the web site http://www.software.ibm.com/enetwork/techexplorer/.
