Netscape, a new World Wide Web Browser, to replace Mosaic

The Netscape browser enables you to view RPInfo, our campuswide information system, as well as other WWW sites around the world. Netscape is similar to Mosaic as offered on RCS in many ways. Notable differences include a Stop button for halting transmissions, buttons at the top of the window and a bookmarks file instead of a "hotlist." You will also find that Netscape allows you to start using a document right away, even as it continues to load graphics and other information. We think you will find that Netscape is faster.

To start up Netscape, enter the following commands at a UNIX prompt on an RCS workstation:

setup netscape-new
netscape &
The first time you run Netscape, a license notice appears; click on the Accept button to accept the terms of the Netscape agreement. Then, each time you use Netscape, a startup screen appears; click once to bring up RPInfo.

There is on-line help. Click the Help button at the top right of the window.

If you have a "hotlist" in Mosaic, you can transfer this information to Netscape. When you are running Netscape, pull down Bookmarks --> View Bookmarks, click on Edit, click on Import Bookmarks (upper right of window), highlight the file .mosaic-hotlist-default.html, and click OK. If this doesn't work, quit Netscape, and enter the following command at a UNIX prompt:

hot-convert.sh
Now, when you run Netscape, your Mosaic hotlist will appear in the Bookmarks menu.

On Wednesday, February 1, Netscape will become presetup, and you will no longer have to issue the setup command before using it. On Wednesday, February 15, Netscape will replace Mosaic on the Applications menu although Mosaic will be available through the end of the semester.
