The current version of ispell (3.1.20), a UNIX spell-checking program, was replaced on October 23 in order to fix an obsure bug, in which, under certain circumstances, ispell ignored all characters between < and > in a .tex file, skipping any misspelled words in that region. That problem has now been fixed, and users should not notice any other differences in the behavior of ispell.
To run ispell, enter the following command from a UNIX prompt, where filename refers to the name of the file you wish to spell-check:
ispell filename
An ispell manual page (man page) -- containing information on building dictionaries, the files ispell uses, interfaces to other programs, and more -- exists on RCS. To access it, enter the command man ispell from a UNIX prompt.
