Version 5 of FrameMaker, which is currently available in "new" mode on most public worksations and is the default on the SGI workstations in VCC South and JEC 3207, will become the system default on all platforms on Friday, June 27.
Currently, to use Frame 5 on the non-SGI workstations, enter the following commands from a UNIX prompt:
setup frame-new frame &
A list of FrameMaker 5's major enhancements appears below:
For a complete description of the changes in Frame 5, read the on-line manual "What's New in FrameMaker," available by left-clicking on the Help button in Frame's main "button bar" menu.
The first time you use Frame 5, the program will create a new directory called Frame5 to hold your FrameMaker files. When you open an older document created with Frame 4, the program will convert it to Frame 5 and generate a message to that effect.
Note that Frame 4 cannot open a Frame 5 document. If you are on a workstation running Frame 4 and you would like to open a Frame 5 document, it is best to use the commands given above to first setup frame-new and use Frame 5. However, if while using Frame 5, you know you will want to open the document later with Frame 4, you can save it as a MIF file. Frame 4 will be able to open the MIF file, although any new Frame 5 features will not be available.
When Frame 5 becomes the default on June 27, you will no longer have to set it up. You will still be able to access the Version 4 of the package until July 25 by entering the command setup frame-old from a UNIX prompt before running the program.
If you have any further questions about using Frame 5, please contact the consultants at the ACS Help Desk locations, or direct electronic mail to consult@rpi.edu.
