SecureCRT, a secure replacement for telnet that runs on Windows machines, is now available to the Rensselaer community.
A standard telnet session on the Internet transmits your userid, password, and other private information in an easily readable format. SecureCRT, on the other hand, uses the Secure Shell (ssh) protocol to ensure that all communication with the remote command or shell is automatically encrypted. The ssh program has been available on RCS UNIX machines for over a year, and now SecureCRT provides the same security for your personal computer. (Please see the URL http://www.rpi.edu/Computing/New/Software/ssh.html for more information on ssh.)
CIS has purchased enough SecureCRT licenses for the entire Rensselaer community, and we strongly recommend that everyone use it in place of telnet. The license, which gives you the permission necessary to download the SecureCRT program from RCS and run it on your PC, costs $10 for an individually-owned PC. The cost will appear on your next printing bill.
Individuals may obtain a license by opening a UNIX window and entering the following command:
buy_securecrt
Answer "yes" at the prompts to accept the terms of the license agreement.
Schools and departments may obtain multiple licenses by filling out the SecureCRT License Agreement form and returning it to the VCC Help Desk. (The departmental form is available at the Help Desk, or in PDF format at the URL http://www.rpi.edu/dept/cis/software/SecureCRT/public_html/.)
After you obtain the license, you will receive e-mail confirming the transaction and telling you where to find instructions for downloading and installing the program. Once installed on your PC, the program is easy to use and has extensive on-line help.
