Academic Computing Services to Offer SGI Short Course

ACS will again offer a special non-credit short course on how to use the new SGI workstations on Monday, October 28 from 2 - 3 p.m. in JEC 3207. There is no registration; however, attendance will be limited to the seating capacity of the lab, so please come early.

A Rensselaer userid, available only to members of the Rensselaer community (students, faculty, or staff), enables you to use the SGI workstations, as well as any of the several hundred other RCS workstations on campus. Having a Rensselaer userid also allows you to dial in remotely, and to print your work. If you do not have a Rensselaer userid, you can obtain one by bringing your Rensselaer I.D. card to the Help Desk in the VCC.

The course will include:

• A brief introduction to the IRIX operating system
• A discussion of what RCS applications are, and are not, available
• An introduction to some SGI-specific applications, such as:
  • the Desktop
  • the Showcase presentation tool
  • the digital camera
  • Sound capabilities
• Computer graphics applications
  • An introduction to using OpenGL
  • An introduction to using, and revolving objects in, OpenInventor
  • Other available 2D and 3D graphics tools
