Forty-eight new modems, capable of communicating with other modems at speeds as high as 33.6Kbps, are now immediately available. CIS' Network Support Services group will eventually add another 48 modems to the pool to meet user demand.
Users should note that while the new modems can communicate at speeds as high as 33.6Kbps, this upper limit reflects use under optimum conditions; speeds will more typically range from 19.2 to 21.6 Kbps. This means that even if you have a brand new 28.8 Kbps modem, you probably won't connect at a speed higher than the above-mentioned range.
The telephone number for the new modem pool is 271-3800.
Please note the 271- exchange; this number does not use the 276- used for most campus telephones. Also note that you cannot access this service from on-campus; this new modem pool was intended for use by off-campus users only.
As a final, yet very important note, users should note that, while we do not currently charge for this service, we may need to do so at some point in the future.
