The new software allows mailing list (mail group alias) owners to manage and maintain their own mailing lists; list owners control how users join the list, and also how list members post messages. ListProc also offers other features that RCS mail group aliases don't provide.
ListProc mail group names will have a format similar to those used in LISTSERV: name-l@lists.rpi.edu
Those LISTSERV mailing lists that were formerly on the VM.ITS.RPI.EDU machine have already moved to the new software and the new lists.rpi.edu machine, and in the future most new mail groups will be created using ListProc. However, the RCS Postmaster will continue using other procedures to create some small mail groups on RCS. Currently, postmaster-created mail groups have a maximum of 100 names, but but as of January 1, 1999, the maximum will decrease to 20. Therefore, any users who will need to create a mail group of more than 20 people should use the new ListProc software.
If you would like to request a ListProc list, or if you have any questions, please feel free to send electronic mail to postmaster@rpi.edu.
