As part of an ongoing project to bring Rensselaer closer to the leading edge of computing by keeping up-to-date with what vendors are offering and supporting, Computing & Information Services' Server Supprt Services group is currently upgrading the IBM, Sun, and SGI operating systems across campus.
The specific operating system upgrades appear below:
SGI model O2s will be running Irix 6.3; please note that due to the architecture of this model, only Irix 6.3 will run on the O2's. However, SGI hopes to have a single Irix platform in the near future for both the "Indy" workstations and the O2s.
The group has been making the transition to these latest platforms gradually over the past few months, in order to keep user impact to a minimum. In fact, it's very likely that the RCS-supported machine on which you're now working is already using its new higher operating system level. If it isn't, it should be by the appropriate date listed above.
To determine which operating system is currently running on your machine, enter one of the following commands from a UNIX window, depending on your workstation machine type:
For an IBM machine, enter oslevel
For a Sun or SGI machine, enter uname -rs
If you have any additional questions about your machine's operating system, please contact the student consultants at the ACS Help Desk locations, or direct electronic mail to consult@rpi.edu.
