Libraries Announce MasterFILE Select, TOPICsearch Databases

MasterFILE Select, an on-line index and abstracting service that also includes many full text articles, is now available through the Rensselaer Libraries. MasterFILE Select is part of the EBSCOhost family of databases, as are Academic Search Elite, Business Source Elite, and Newspaper Source, which are already offered by the Libraries under the EBSCOhost title.

MasterFILE Select provides full text from 760 general reference, business, consumer health, general science, humanities, and multi-cultural periodicals.

In addition to the full text, this database, which is updated daily, offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 2,650 periodicals. Full text backfiles go as far back as January of 1990, while indexing and abstract backfiles go as far back as January of 1984.

The TOPICsearch current events database is also available. Including 40,000 full text documents carefully selected by librarians and teachers, the TOPICsearch database offers resources such as:

MasterFILE Select is made available to all libraries in New York State through EmpireLink, a pilot project of the New York State Library that provides the people of New York State with free access to full-text, online, commercial databases through their libraries. First launched in January 1999 and projected to continue for three years, EmpireLink is funded through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). EmpireLink participants have access to the Gale Group's Health Reference Center-Academic, the Carl Corporation's Dialog@CARL-Basic Collection, and now the EBSCO databases, MasterFILE Select, and TOPICsearch.

The new MasterFILE Select and TOPICsearch databases are currently both available via the main RensSearch homepage. To access them, select the RensSearch link from the Libraries section of the main RPInfo homepage, then select the More... and What's New links from the subsequent resulting pages.

If you have any comments or questions about either of these new databases, please direct them to Mary Anne Waltz by phoning ext. 8345, or by directing electronic mail to waltzm@rpi.edu.
