Computer Viruses: An Additional Alert

In light of the fact that new computer viruses keep cropping up to pose a potential threat to the security and safety of the data stored on your PC, CIS would like to once again stress the importance of keeping your antivirus software up-to-date in order to provide the protection for which it's been designed.

Every month, the virus protection software vendors publish updates to the virus signature databases that the software uses to detect and clean the new viruses that appear. However, without these monthly updates, your virus protection product will be unable to detect or clean up a new virus, should that virus find its way to your system.

In addition to regularly updating your virus detection software, you should also update your Microsoft operating system on a regular basis to ensure that it is compatible with, and can take advantage of, the most recent anti-virus capabilities. Please refer to the 'Before You Leave Campus...' section of the article "Some Important Laptop Reminders" for instructions on how to run your Windows Update.
