The Rensselaer Libraries have two new trial databases available: CogNet and POIESIS.
Through March 20, the Rensselaer Libraries welcome all users to try the CogNet Library, project of the Congnitive Science program at MIT which consists of a growing collection of searchable electronic texts for cognitive and brain sciences. Located at the URL http://cognet.mit.edu, the CogNet Library contains electronic access to works from MIT Press, including:
The Libraries are also offering a trial of POIESIS, a database of Philosophy Online Serials, through March 15. Located at the URL http://poiesis.nlx.com, POIESIS is a reference and publishing service that offers searchable on-line access to a single database containing the full text of current, recent, and back issues of a growing number of philosophy journals.
POIESIS, which includes dozens of philosophy journals published by philosophical societies, departments, university presses, and commercial publishers, provides a unique service, allowing users to search the entire full text database for any word or combination of words, and to view up to a paragraph of text around each "hit." Search results are presented on a results map, allowing users to see the article title, the journal name and issue, and all of the "hits" with a limited display of text. Abstracts, if available, are also viewable.
If you have any comments about these new trial databases, please send them to the Reference team by sending e-mail to lib-support@rpi.edu, or directly to Mary Anne Waltz, librarian for the department of Philosophy, Psychology, and Congnitive Science (PPCS) within Rensselaer's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, by directing electronic mail to waltzm@rpi.edu.
