Remote Access Machine Added

We're pleased to announce the arrival of our newest RCS remote access machine, which was put into service the week of September 17th. The new machine, a SUN Enterprise 220R containing two 450MHz UltraSPARC processors, 4MB external cache, and 2GB memory, is running the RCS Solaris 8 image.

As of the writing of this article, the ACM had not yet updated their packages to reflect the new RCS Solaris 8 image. ACM packages that users have set to run out of their .login_profile, .bashrc, .xrc , etc may not work correctly and may prevent you from logging into the new SUN remote access machine. Please seek help at the Academic and Research Computing Help Desk locations to remove the references if necessary.

In order to assist with the transition from Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 8, users can access each operating system level directly, instead of using the rcs-sun rotary. The direct names for the Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 8 images are rcs-sun1.rcs.rpi.edu and rcs-sun3.rpi.edu, respectively.

At the end of November, rcs-sun1.rcs.rpi.edu will be retired, and rcs-sun3.rpi.edu will simply become rcs-sun.rpi.edu.
