A Note to Pro/ENGINEER Users

A Note to Pro/ENGINEER Users

As many of you are aware, the Solidworks solid modeling package has been introduced to freshman students as part of the Mobile Computing Program here at Rensselaer, and also as part of the curriculum developed by Core Engineering.

So what do you do if you're a student who has been using Pro/ENGINEER during your career here at Rensselaer? In a word...relax. Pro/ENGINEER remains a strategic application here on campus, and there are no plans to discontinue using the product. In fact, we will be running Pro/E in parallel with Solidwords for the foreseeable future, so you can continue to use the Pro/E package just as you have been all along.

However, since more and more PCs have become available on campus, Solidworks was introduced as an alternative to Pro/ENGINEER, with the native Windows application offering substantial benefits for those using Windows computing platforms. (Pro/ENGINEER has always been a strong UNIX-based product and, while it is available for the Windows operating system, it is still a ported product, and as a result some useability issues do appear in the Windows environment.)

We hope that by using both products at Rensselaer, the curriculum will benefit by the strength of these two tools and we will help the companies involved drive innovation in their products.

If you have any questions regarding the deployment of either Pro/ENGINEER or Solidworks, please contact Site Software Licensing Manager Jeff Burdyl by directing e-mail to burdyj@rpi.edu.
