Rensselaer Libraries Unveil New Web Proxy Service

Rensselaer's Research Libraries now offer a new proxy service that simplifies access to valuable on-line resources for off-campus users.

Many of the databases and e-journals that are provided by our libraries are IP address restricted. This means that in order to gain access from an off-campus computer, you need to either be using RPI as your internet service provider (ISP) or using a web proxy service. A web proxy can temporarily assign your computer a Rensselaer IP address, even if you are using another ISP like AOL or RoadRunner for your Internet access.

The Libraries' previous proxy service did not work with Internet Explorer, and only worked with version 4 of the Netscape Navigator browser. The new service works with current versions of both browsers. This means that off-campus users now have the freedom to search premium databases and read on-line books and journals with whichever browser they prefer.

In order to use the service, you will be required to make a few simple modifications to your browser. Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found at http://opac.lib.rpi.edu/screens/wamproxy.html.

Once your browser is properly configured, you will need to use your Rensselaer Identification Number (RIN) and Library PIN to access restricted on-line resources. Information on your RIN can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/newid/, and instructions on obtaining your library PIN can be found at http://www.lib.rpi.edu/services/policies/pins.html.

If you have questions about using the proxy service, please contact the library staff by directing e-mail to lib-support@rpi.edu.
