We're pleased to be able to announce WebMail @ Rensselaer, a new mail utility that allows you to use a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape to access your electronic mail.
So where do you begin? Well, the first thing to do is start WebMail via the URL http://webmail.rpi.edu. This page includes a link to answers to some of the most frequently-asked questions about WebMail, and also gives you an opportunity to join the WEBMAIL-ANNOUNCE-L mailing list, which provides timely announcements about changes in WebMail.
To actually start using WebMail, enter your RCS userID and password in the grey box at the top right of the page, then click on the Check Mail button. This will bring you to the WebMail "index" page; for detailed help, click on Help at the top of the window.
Most simply put, WebMail @ Rensselaer lets you use any HTML-compliant Web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) to send and receive e-mail from anywhere. To see a diagram explaining how the system works, refer to the URL http://www.emumail.com/how.html.
No. WebMail simply provides an additional option for sending and reading e-mail. You can continue to use your present e-mail program if you choose.
Yes. You can use other e-mail clients in addition to WebMail, but remember that, in order to avoid the "disappearing" mail syndrome, you will need to understand how each mail client handles mail left on the POP server, known as mail.rpi.edu. No mail is ever lost or actually disappears, but, without an understanding of how each mail client operates, it may seem that way to you. WebMail deletes read mail from the POP server when you empty the trash bin, or after 10 days by default. If you wish, you may change that to a maximum of 21 days, or a minimum of 0 days.
Yes. In fact, for this very reason, we think WebMail will prove to be a great benefit to members of the Rensselaer community who may be out of town at a conference, or otherwise away from campus for a while. You can access WebMail off campus the same way you access it on campus, via the URL http://webmail.rpi.edu.
For answers to many more WebMail questions, please refer to the URL given above, then click on the WebMail FAQ link from the resulting WebMail page.
