Beginning in January, the Rensselaer community, through the Libraries, will have access to an important new on-line resource. More than 200 databases comprise the DIALOG@CARL Basic Collection, including dozens of full-text newspapers and journals, indexing and abstracting sources, and reference materials. Of special interest to our users will be the full-text of the Albany Times Union from 1986, the full-text of Science from January 1996, U.S. Patents full-text from 1971 and European Patents from 1976, bibliographic databases such as TOXLINE, GeoArchive, and Current Biotechnology Abstracts, and the Merck Index Online.
Access to these resources is made available through EmpireLink, which is a pilot project initiated by the New York State Library to provide the people of New York State with free access to full-text, on-line, commercial databases through their libraries. Launched in January 1999 and projected to continue for three years, EmpireLink is funded by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to the New York State Library. EmpireLink already provides access to the Gale Group's Health Reference Center-Academic (HRC-Academic) database.
