As a result of Rensselaer's Workstation Renewal program and the Office of the Provost's Laptop Classroom project, a number of classrooms have been upgraded over the summer.
Two new laptop classrooms were added in Sage and the CII; Sage 4101 is now equipped with laptop jacks and network ports, and CII 3039 with data and power outlets for laptops. Both rooms have also been fitted with new projection systems.
The lab in VCC North now houses 25 sleek new Dell GX400 PCs, with each machine having a 1.4 GHz processor, 256 MB of RAM, and 17" LCD display panel. The same machines have also been installed in Troy 2012.
The IBM IntelliStations which were removed from VCC North have been used to replace older systems in the basement lab of the Folsom Library, thereby increasing the number of machines which will be available for public access when others are in use during class time.
The southwestern corner of the VCC lobby was also updated, thanks to the installation of twelve new Sun Ultra 10 workstations, each running Solaris 8 and having an UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 18" LCD monitor, and a 20GB hard drive.
In addition, new teachers' workstations, each in the form of a Dell GX150 PC having a 1GHz processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 15" display panel, have been installed in a number of classrooms across campus: Amos Eaton 214, 215, and 216; CII 4034 and 4040; Greene 120; Ricketts 211, and Sage 2715 and 3303.
In addition to all of the machines that have been physically replaced, all of the computer labs -- with the exception of Sage 4510 -- have been upgraded to the Windows 2000 Professional operating system. Many labs also got a cosmetic pick-me-up by being furnished with new carpeting, furniture, and/or a new coat of paint.
In addition to these room updates, the remote access pool also saw some upgrades. An additional machine, in the form of a Sun Enterprise 220R with two 450MHz UltraSPARC-II processors, 2GB of memory, and two 36GB disk drives, has been added to the remote access pool. This system replaces the two older Ultra 1 remote access systems.
