Students entering Rensselaer as freshmen this year are the third class to be required to have laptop computers. The machine chosen for this year, the IBM ThinkPad T22 model 2647-6EU, comes with a special set of preloaded software which includes Microsoft Windows 98 and Office XP Professional, Maple 7, and LabView.

The majority of the computers are being distributed on Sunday, August 26, with Resident Advisors in the residence halls bringing students in groups to pick up their laptops, security cables, and backpacks. From there, students will proceed to a classroom where staff members will assist them in configuring their machines for user on the campus network.
