Rensselaer Eudora V2.1.1 for MS-Windows Installation Guide

This is a guide to installing Eudora V2.1.1 on a PC in the Rensselaer computing environment.

Before installing Eudora V2.1.1 on your system you must have network transport software that supports the Windows Sockets interface (winsock) running on your computer. FTP Software's PC/TCP can be purchased from ACS to provide the necessary network transport .

Before attempting to install Eudora on your system, be sure the necessary network transport software is installed and working properly. At the very least, if your network transport has a "ping" program, you should verify that you can "ping" pop1.rpi.edu.

Eudora V2.1.1 occupies about 2.5 Megabytes of disk space when installed. You will need at least twice that amount of disk space free (5 Megabytes) to successfully install Eudora V2.1.1.

You should have received ...

• Two high density diskettes labeled Eudora V2.1.1 for MS-Windows

If any of these items are missing, return to the ACS Computer Store to obtain the complete package before attempting to install the software.

Installation

• Put the Eudora disk in your floppy drive, (A: or B:).
• From the Windows Program Manager, click on File and select Run...
• In the dialog box, enter A:\SETUP, and click on OK. A series of dialog boxes will be presented in which you provide information needed to install Eudora on your computer.
• Welcome: Click on CONTINUE.
• Destination Directory: Accept the default C:\EUDORA, make sure the box CREATE PROGRAM GROUP ITEMS is checked, and click on INSTALL.
• The Eudora installation program loads Eudora onto your system.

Configuration

After completing the installation you need to run Eudora and configure it for your use.

You will need to know your Rensselaer Computing System, or RCS, user id and password. If you have never used RCS, or never picked up your account, you'll need to go to the Help Desk in the VCC with your Rensselaer ID card and get your RCS user id and password before configuring Eudora.

Normally, your RCS user id consists of the first five letters of your last name, the first letter of your first name, and possibly some digits. If your name was John Doe, your RCS user id might be doej.

When you're ready to configure Eudora, do the following:

• Start the Eudora program by double clicking on Eudora in the Eudora by QUALCOMM Program Manager Group.
• Click on Special.
• Click on Settings...
• The settings dialog box is displayed. Along the left side of the dialog box are icons representing different categories of configuration information. Eudora has been pre-configured for user John Doe, doej@rpi.edu. You will need to visit Getting Started and Personal Information categories. Change all occurences of John Doe to your full name and all occurrences of doej to your RCS userid.
• When you've correctly filled in the entries on the form, click on OK

Checking Mail

After you've configured Eudora for your RCS user id, you can check you mail using the following steps:

• From the menu, click on File.
• Click on Check Mail.
• Eudora will prompt for your RCS password. Enter the password and click on OK.
• Eudora checks for mail and retrieves any that has arrived.

A Note on Passwords

You should change your RCS password after initially picking up your account and a few times a year after the initial change. To change you RCS password you have to login to RCS and use the RCS passwd command. If you need help changing your password, go to the ACS Help Desk/Consulting in the VCC.

Eudora provides a command to change your password on the Special menu. This command WILL NOT WORK at Rensselaer. You must log in to RCS and use the RCS passwd command to change your password.
