Using the Eudora Pro Mail Program on Your PC
(Versions 4.0.1 and Above)

The instructions and setup configurations described in this document apply to version 4.0.1 (and above) of the commercial Eudora Pro mail program in a personal computer environment.

Getting Started

In order to send and receive mail messages, you must have an account on a computer running a POP (Post Office Protocol) server, as well as access to a computer running an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server. Your incoming e-mail messages get delivered to your POP account, where Eudora in turn picks them up and transfers them to your PC. Your outgoing messages get sent to the SMTP server, which delivers the messages to their intended recipients. Rensselaer provides both the POP and SMTP servers, and you automatically receive e-mail privileges as a member of the campus community.

Note: If you are connected through an alternate ISP, you will not be able to send mail outside the rpi.edu domain using the mail.rpi.edu SMTP server. Please contact your ISP for the appropriate SMTP server information.

To install Eudora on your PC, follow the installation instructions that come with the product. After you have installed Eudora, double-click on its icon to start the program. The Getting Started Options will appear on the screen. Follow the prompts. You will need to know your RCS userid, as well as,

\begin{alltt}
Mail Server (Incoming): mail.rpi.edu
SMTP Server (Outgoing): mail.rpi.edu
\end{alltt}

You will find that some of the fields described below will already be filled in with this information.

Getting Additional Help

The commercial Eudora package comes with a manual that explains the various setup options, and you will find this to be a good source for how-to-use information. Some of the topics that may interest you include working with signature files, attaching a file to a message, including a URL in a message, spell-checking, and filtering messages.

The Eudora Pro commercial software is available from the Campus Computer Store; please refer to the web page located at the URL http://www.rpi.edu/dept/computer_store/ for pricing information.
