Previewing Your Work

It's often a good idea to check your work before you make it available to the public. The best way to do this is to look at it in a WWW browser.

If you are using a personal computer, you should be able to set the browser to run locally on your machine, and then open a local file. For example, on a Macintosh version of Netscape, you can open the File menu and select Open File to open a file on your own computer.

If you wish, you can preview your work on RCS. Your files are not public until you link them to RPInfo. Even if you already have files that are public via RPInfo, your new files do not become public until you link them to one of the already public pages.

Once you load your files into RCS, start up Netscape by selecting RPInfo: Campus Information from the RCS Applications menu. When Netscape appears, select the File menu, then Open File. You can then select files to open and view them in Netscape. Alternatively, if you have placed your files in your public_html directory (see below), you can view them by entering the URL http://www.rpi.edu/~userid/filename. Note that you do not include ``public_html".

If you are using the ASHE editor (described earlier), you can preview your file as you work by clicking on Reload in the File menu.

If you are using a dial-in connection and can't view graphics, you can still start up a text-only browser called Lynx by entering the command lynx filename.html at a UNIX prompt replacing filename.html with the name of the file you wish to view. To view RPInfo, enter the command rpinfo.
