Transferring Non-Text Files

As you use FTP, you may want to transfer non-text files, such as those that contain programs, or that have been ``compressed'' in some way. Files having the .tar and .Z extensions, as well as files that contain graphics or pictures, are usually binary files.

If you are transferring a binary (non-printing characters) file, you must enter the following command at the ftp> prompt before transferring the file:

binary

To return to transferring text files, enter:

ascii
