Introduction to the Fortran Programming Language

This three-day course is scheduled for May 12, 13, and 14 from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (with a break for lunch). It will be held in CII 3045. The course fee is $10; student discounts do not apply.

The course provides a brief practical introduction to the Fortran-77 programming language for those who need to write and maintain scientific and engineering codes. It will emphasize those language features that are most useful in performing numerical calculations, and it will use examples to illustrate some techniques that are commonly used in programming for scientific and engineering applications. Various issues of style will be discussed.

Course outline:

Note that this course is only about writing Fortran programs; you will not learn how to use compilers or debuggers to run Fortran programs on RCS. If you already know how to program in Fortran, and only need information about compiling and running your programs on RCS, you should sign up for the short course "Workstation Fortran."

For more information about the content of this course, contact Mike Kupferschmid, the instructor, at ext. 6558 or send electronic mail to kupfem@rpi.edu.

Introduction to RCS

This course is scheduled for May 20 from 3 - 5 pm in VCC South.

This course briefly covers the following topics: Using Your Account Responsibly, Getting Started with Workstations, Applications on RCS, Maple, Matlab, SIS, Brief Introduction to UNIX, Printing, Z-Mail (electronic mail) and RPInfo (World Wide Web Browser).

ACS has prepared a tutorial document covering these topics. During this two-hour session, for which there is no registration fee, an instructor will lead you through this tutorial. If you received a copy of the tutorial when you picked up your RCS userid, be sure to bring it to class. Additional helpers will also be present to assist you.

Introduction to UNIX

This course is scheduled for May 22 from 3 - 5 pm in VCC South.

This course provides an introduction to the UNIX operating system as it is used on RCS workstations. It begins with a review of 10 UNIX commands mentioned in "Introduction to RCS", many of which have to do with managing and printing files. Then it describes output redirection, pipes, and filename wildcards, and introduces 10 assorted new UNIX commands that are often useful. Finally, it describes the file system and path names, reviews 4 UNIX commands for manipulating directories, and introduces AFS commands for controlling directory permissions. Brief exercises are interspersed between topics for hands-on practice. This course provides a basis for many other short courses, including those on emacs, vi, and Fortran.
