Tips for Using WordPerfect on RCS
Tips for Using WordPerfect on RCS
Note that WordPerfect on RCS, from Version 7.0 on, is now maintained
only on AIX and Solaris Workstations. Unfortunately, since Corel is
dropping support for the SGI platform, WordPerfect on the SGI labs will
remain at Version 6.0. Note that you can use Version 6 to open a document
created with a later version of WordPerfect, but some features will not be
available.
To use WordPerfect on an RCS workstation, either select WordPerfect from the
applications menu or, in a UNIX window, type the command:
xwp &
Saving Your Work
Note that the autosave feature is not in effect until you have saved
your document for the first time. When starting a new document, be
sure to save very early.
Black & White Printing
To print on the default printer for your location,
in the WordPerfect "Select Printer" window, select the printer driver with
the destination POSTSCRIPT. To print to a file, select the destination
<doc>.dsk. To choose a printer other than the default,
select the printer with Printerchooser before starting WordPerfect.
(Or: quit WP, use Printerchooser, and restart WP.)
Color Printing
To print on the default color printer for your location,
in the WordPerfect "Select Printer" window, select the printer driver with
the destination COLORPOSTSCRIPT.
Before printing, check in the Print window, under Document Settings, to
make sure that Print Color is set to be Full Color.
To choose a color printer other than the
default (usually a Tektronix Phaser III), you must add this printer yourself
to WordPerfect's list. This is necessary because selecting a printer through
the Printerchooser changes your default POSTSCRIPT printer but has no effect
on your default COLORPOSTSCRIPT printer.
For Instructions on adding a personal printer, read the section below.
Adding a Personal Printer
When you first start WordPerfect (Version 7 and later), there should be
three shared printers listed in the "Select Printer" menu:
<doc>.dsk (for printing
to a file), POSTSCRIPT (for printing to the default black & white printer),
and COLORPOSTSCRIPT (for printing to the default color printer, which
is usually a Tektronix Phaser III).
You may add personal printers to this list by following the steps below to
choose an appropriate printer driver and destination for each printer.
-
From the File menu, choose Select Printer....
In the window that appears listing the available printers,
click on Printer Create/Edit....
-
In the new window that appears, Click on the box Add....
From list in the window, click on the name of the printer driver appropriate
for the printer you want to use, e.g., Tektronix Printer 200i.
Click OK, then Click OK again in the small box that pops up.
-
Click on the box Setup..., and in the setup window that appears,
click on Destination... (near the bottom of the window).
A Destination window will pop up.
-
To select a specific printer, click on Lpr/AIX (or Lp/Lpr,
depending on your platform). In the list that appears, scroll down
(using the down-arrow key on the keyboard)
until you find the name of the RCS printer you want, for example
VCC_Tektronix_200i_Letter. Select it and click OK.
Click OK on the next box. You should now have a new personal printer in
your list of available printers.
Window Managers
If you are using a window manager other than mwm (the RCS default),
there is no guarantee that everything will work correctly. For example,
with tvtwm, certain uses of the middle mouse button cause the program
to freeze.
If you have further questions about using WordPerfect, please contact the
consultants at the ACS Help Desk locations, or direct e-mail to
consult@rpi.edu.
WordPerfect 7.0 also provides extensive on-line help; to access it,
left-click on the Help menu option from the program's main menubar.
