FrameMaker has a feature called "smart spaces" that does not allow the typing of multiple spaces; that is, no matter how many spaces you type (or try to type) between words, FrameMaker inserts only one space. This feature allows you to be a little less consistent in your actual typing and still get consistent word spacing in your finished document.
If you wish, you can turn the Smart Spaces feature on or off. To do this, first pull down the Format menu at the top of the FrameMaker main window, and then select the Document... option from the sub-menu which appears.
A separate FrameMaker Document Properties dialog box will appear. Slightly above the vertical center of this dialog box, you should find a "Smart Spaces" option; make sure the little square button to the left of this option is "pushed in" to enable the Smart Spaces, or that the button is "popped out" to turn off the Smart Spaces feature. Left-clicking on this small button will toggle back and forth between the Smart Spaces being on or off.
