Subject: File Backups

Software Category: system
Supported by: ACS

Description:

Your files are backed up several times a week and you can easily retrieve copies yourself from your home directory. Backups are done Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 a.m.

Getting Started:

From your home directory, /locker or /dept directory, enter the following command at a UNIX prompt:

cd yesterday

You are now in your yesterday directory. It is a duplicate of your home (or /locker or /dept) directory. You can copy files out of it into youre regular directory.

Use the cd command to change back to the directory you were originally using.

Documentation:

none

Tips and Hints:

The yesterday directory does not use your personal disk space. It does not count against your quota.

Possible Problems and Solutions:

If you need a file from before the last yesterday backup, you can send a request to restore@rpi.edu. ACS operators will do what they can to restore your work. If there's a problem, someone will contact you directly by electronic mail.
