You are allowed to use a certain amount of RCS disk space for free. For students, it's 5 MB. For faculty and staff, it's 10 MB. You can also obtain additional disk space for your home directory, or additional space to share with others for a project, or space for a department or club.
In any case, you can check how much of that space has been used for storing files.
To see how much disk space you have used, enter the command
fs lq
and the system will respond with a message like this:
Volume Name Quota Used Used Partition user.12231 5000 4418 94 28
Quota shows the total quota, in kilobytes; that you are allowed to use; Used shows how much of that quota, in kilobytes, you have used. Used shows what percentage of your quota you have used. You can ignore the Partition column.
If you want to increase your disk space, please refer to the following help pages:
For more information about using your RCS account, please refer to Memo RPI.113, Using UNIX: The Rensselaer Computing System (RCS).
Once in a while you might find that you cannot open or access your /locker or /dept directories. The server that the files are stored on may be down. To see what server your /dept or /locker directory is on, enter the following command at a UNIX prompt:
fs whereis pathname
For example:
fs whereis /dept/acs
To find out where your home directory is located, enter the command
fs whereis ~
Then, to see which fileservers are down, enter the command
fs checkservers
