At Rensselaer, the student/staff/faculty directory is implemented using a phserver.
The phserver is the informal name given to an electronic phonebook/nameserver database developed at the Computing and Communications Services Office at the University of Illinois by Steve Dorner and others, and since adopted by a number of other institutions.
The ph client has been ported to most major platforms in use on the Internet, from Unix to Mac and PC. Client functions are also built into many of the programs used to provide friendly interfaces to the Internet, such as gopher, World Wide Web, and e-mail packages such as Eudora.
Using netscape or other WWW browser, the Rensselaer phserver can be accessed with the following URL:
http://www.rpi.edu/phserver.html
ph clients and programs with ph support (such as Eudora) should be configured with a host of
phserver.rpi.edu
