The Rensselaer Computing System is currently set up in a way that has been determined to be useful to most users. The default setup uses the Motif window manager and certain colors, and does not automatically start up any applications when you log in; instead, you may select applications from the RCS Applications menu as you wish.
As you become more familiar with RCS, however, you might want to make some changes to this setup, and so it's nice to know that UNIX provides some options with which you can customize your work environment in many ways, some of which are described below.
As you experiment with your work environment, however, remember that the closer you stay to the default, the easier it will be for the Help Desk consultants to help you solve any system problems you might be having.
Click on the items below to obtain more information on customizing your own UNIX work environment.
