Should I Bring a Computer?
You Can
You can bring your computer and use it to connect to DormNet to access
the Rensselaer Computing System (RCS), the library catalog, and other systems.
Benefits of having a computer in your residence hall room include:
- You avoid having to find an available public workstation, personal
computer, or terminal. This can help you save time.
- Direct network connections that give you quick response time. (See
next page.)
- Electronic mail, at any time of the day or night, which gives you
access to faculty, staff, students, and your friends and family at other
universities or companies with access to the Internet.
- Access to high-speed, high-quality printers right from your room.
- Access to campus information, including the campus directory, library
information, job information, computing information, and more without having
to step out to a lab.
If you will be living on campus, and you have a modem, please don't
use it to call DormNet. We prefer to keep the DormNet dial-in modems open
to answer calls from off-campus computer users. If you have a network connection
in your room, you won't need a modem. In fact, one residence hall, the
Quadrangle, uses phone lines that do not work with modems at all.
