Meningitus Immunizations, TB Screenings Scheduled
In preparation for the new academic year, the Student Health Center has announced a schedule of meningitis immunizations and tuberculosis screenings for students, faculty, and staff at Rensselaer.

Meningitis shots will be administered on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Rensselaer Union, and from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Houston Field House. The cost is $85, which can be directly charged to a student's account.

Beginning this year, all incoming freshmen at Rensselaer are required to be immunized against meningitis.

A free TB screening will be held on Monday, Aug. 27, and Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 8:30 to 11 a.m., and from 1 to 5 p.m., at the RPI Playhouse. Participants will be required to return Aug. 29 or 30 to have their test results read.

Free flu shots for Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff will be given in November. Details will be announced later. For more information, call health educator Terri Kersch at ext. 2305.

Lecture on Neutron Compton Scattering Technique
Raymond Moreh, professor of physics at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel, will give a lecture titled "Studies of Gas-Surface Interaction Energies Using Neutron Compton Scattering" on Thursday, August 9, at 3 p.m., in the Nes Conference Room, located in the building adjacent to the Gaertner Accelerator Facility on Tibbits Avenue. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering.

Moreh will discuss direct measurements of the interaction energies between atoms such as helium or neon on carbon surfaces. The measurements were taken using the Neutron Compton Scattering (NCS) technique, which will be described in detail.

HR Continues Progress on Six Point Plan
On July 11 and 12, consultants from William M. Mercer met with members of the President's Cabinet, deans, department chairs, and members of the executive committee of the Faculty Senate to obtain a broader perspective of current pay issues and to understand how to align the compensation program with the strategy and needs of Rensselaer. According to Curtis Powell, vice president of human resources, "the information collected from these meetings will prove invaluable as we move forward with this initiative. Our intent is to complete the pay study by the end of the fiscal year."

Human Resources is in the process of establishing an Advisory Committee, with representatives from across campus, to help guide its work and to assist in the development of appropriate pay programs and strategies.
