A Winning Tradition
Its a story that could come from a Hollywood script... a colorful team of underdogs, coached by a legend in the making, pulls a stunning overtime upset to capture the national championship. But its not fiction its fact, and its the story of Rensselaers own 1954 hockey team and its coach, Ned Harkness. (Read the full story) This year marks the 50th anniversary of that remarkable accomplishment, and Rensselaer will be celebrating both its proud past and promising future in grand style. The annual Big Red Freakout hockey game will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., and this year it features Rensselaers biggest rival, Clarksons Golden Knights. A recognition ceremony for members of the 54 team will be held prior to the game. Fans from every era of Rensselaers hockey history are invited to show support for this years squad, and to honor the alumni who brought the National Championship home in 1954. At the Heffner Alumni House, an Ice House event for fans of all ages will feature face painting, a buffet meal pre-game, free shuttles to and from the Houston Field House, and a post-game victory celebration with members of the team and coaching staff. The game will be broadcast live to more than 50 sites across the United States for the 12th Annual Satellite Hockey Telecast. Visit AlumServ at www.alumni.rpi.edu for the location nearest you, and join other Rensselaer and Clarkson alumni for this exciting tradition. The weekend is also Hockey Alumni Weekend, so all past players are invited to join the festivities and participate in the annual alumni hockey game Saturday afternoon. The 2001-02 celebration of 100 Years of RPI Hockey also featured a Freakout match-up with Clarkson, which RPI won in thrilling fashion. Will history repeat itself this year with an RPI victory? Or better still, with a National Championship for our talented team? Stay tuned... the story continues! For more information, contact Peter Pedone at pedonp@rpi.edu or (518) 276-6061. |

Career Connections
If youre looking for a job, career advice, or any kind of professional contact, look no further than Rensselaers alumni network. Alumni around the world stand ready to help you make the connections you need. All you need to do is tap in! Nicole Tricoukes 00 did, and she landed a great job as a result. Tricoukes discovered the power of the Rensselaer network when she attended an alumni focus group session in New York City. There she met Michael Wellner 64, president of the Westchester/Rockland/Southern Conn. alumni chapter. Wellner, always willing to help a fellow graduate, asked for her resume when he heard she was job-hunting. Wellner forwarded Tricoukes resume to his friend and fellow chapter member, Rob Headley 75, vice president of technical services for Tiffany & Co. Headley, already impressed by the work of Frank Rutigliano 02, Scott Hill 96, and Felix Negron 96, was thrilled to find another exceptional Rensselaer candidate to fill a vacancy at his company, and a match was made. Thanks to her Rensselaer connection, Tricoukes landed an exciting gem of a job as vendor compliance specialist with Tiffany. She works on streamlining and consolidating different business processes to help think about the future. Its quite strategic, actually, and a lot of fun, Tricoukes says. Rensselaers alumni network is as powerful and far-reaching as any of our peer schools networks, says Jeff Schanz, director of alumni relations. Regional chapter events are a great way to meet local alumni and find connections in your area. Affinity events happen around the country, bringing together alumni who share similar professional interests. Campus events, like Reunion or sporting events, also present networking opportunities. There are also a wide variety of online options, such as the RenSource networking database, exclusive career services Web sites, discussion groups, and more. Watch your mail and e-mail for invites to alumni events, visit AlumServ or call the alumni relations office at (518) 276-6205 to start making your own precious alumni connections. |
