Honorary membership is the societys highest award, with only one presentation allowed each year, and a maximum of 25 living individuals. The list of honorary members stretches back to 1919 and includes Thomas Edison and Charles Kettering, among many distinguished scientists and industrialists. Other Rensselaer graduates who have been awarded honorary membership are Richard Pitler, M.S. 56, Ph.D. 64, and Donald Muzyka, M.S. 66. Krashes, who is retired chief executive officer of MMR Group, was cited for his unique leadership of ASM in strategic planning, financial management, and membership development and for his contributions as a metallurgist, entrepreneur, and businessman to commercial failure analyses. Krashes has served ASM as a volunteer in many capacities, the highest being as president, 1981-82. A World War II infantry veteran and member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, Krashes earned his B.S. in physics, and M.S. and Ph.D. in metallurgy, all from Rensselaer. He was a longtime director and president of the Worcester, Mass., Boys Club, an elected school board member, and is now a trustee of the American Folk Art Museum in New York City.
