Members of the Council of the City of New York present Virginia and Herb Kee 50, center, with a proclamation honoring their community service. The Council of the City of New York honored Virginia and Herbert Kee 50 for their more than 35 years of service to New Yorks Chinese community. The award was presented Feb. 6 by the City Council during the Chinese New Year cultural celebration. Among the Kees many projects was the founding of the Chinese-American Planning Council, which started as a borrowed storefront with no funding and which has become a multi-service social service agency for Asians with an annual budget of over $59 million. Also, in 1965, the Kees worked to bring the first Youth Program and Head Start program to Chinatown. Herb Kee was one of the early supporters of the Chinatown Health Clinic, and has mentored countless young people, influencing a number of them toward a career in medicine. A proclamation issued by the Council stated, Together, Dr. Herbert Kee and his wife, Virginia, exemplify all that is best in the human spirit of endeavor: abundant generosity; dedication to and concern for others; advocating and proudly extolling ones heritage; the development of ones intellect, spirit and talents to help nurture and educate the young, and a commitment to the values and issues that most forcefully strengthen community bonds. |
