William Middleton 50 - Indiana University Press, 2001 It took seven decades, but the dream of the City of Quebec for a great railway bridge across the St. Lawrence was finally realized in 1917. The Bridge at Quebec provides a full account of the long effort to build a bridge across the St. Lawrence at this difficult site, with particular emphasis on the extraordinary story of the failure of the first bridge, its engineers and their fateful decisions, the terrible collapse of 1907, the human tragedies that accompanied it, and the lessons that its story holds even today for engineers and builders as they continue to extend the boundaries of technology. More than 80 years later, no one has yet built a longer cantilever span, so the bridge still ranks as the greatest of its kind ever built. William Middleton 50 is a retired commander in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps, and former chief facilities officer at the University of Virginia. He has been a transportation historian and journalist for almost 50 years. |
