The greatest thing that we can do at this point is to care and look out for each other and to pray for all of those affected, she said in her announcement.
Two days later, faculty, staff, and students again came together for a Gathering of Remembrance, held in the Alumni Sports & Recreation Center. And ever since that first blood drive, where people waited hours for the opportunity to give, campus groups have responded in myriad ways to the crisis, providing support for the campus community, aid to the victims and the recovery effort, and opportunities for public discourse.
Among the many responses, Rensselaer contributed $50,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, the Office of First Year Experience sponsored a pasta dinner to benefit the families of New York City firefighters who perished, Professor of Art Larry Kagan 68 took part in an art sale to benefit survivors of the terrorist attacks, MBA students designed and sold T-shirts to raise funds for victims of the attacks, and the Greek community sponsored a week of activities called Operation Patriotism to raise funds for children of the attacks victims.
Providing opportunities for discussion and exploration of issues has been an important aspect of the campus response. A group of faculty, students, and staff created the 9-11 Open Response Committee to organize ongoing discussion forums, and the Rensselaer Alumni Association set up an online discussion board, where people could share reactions and specific information about survivors. Members of the Counseling Center were available to meet with individuals or groups. A Web site was created with a link from the Institutes home page, www.rpi.edu, to provide continuing coverage of campus response to the tragedy, including campus safety and preparedness procedures.
