FIFTY YEARS OF THE HOUSTON FIELD HOUSE
Howard Snow ’72 Cincinnati, Ohio In the fall of 1971, an unknown singer named Don McLean appeared at the Field House as the warmup act for the featured performer (I can’t remember who it was). Among the songs he played was a catchy tune called “American Pie,” which no one had heard before. Two months later, that song was a huge hit. During that Christmas, you could cruise the AM dial at night and hear it almost continuously. Those of us at that concert were probably among the first to hear that song.
