| Lally School Conference Gathers Experts on Science and Technology in China |

Government representatives, businesspeople, and top researchers in the areas of science and technology, management, public policy, education, and research and development in China shared their insights on the countrys role as a modern technology leader at a conference sponsored by Rensselaers Lally School Sept. 4 through 6.
The meeting, titled Chinas Emerging Technological Trajectory in the 21st Century, featured such prominent experts as Jin Xiaoming, minister-counselor of Science & Technology for the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China; Fang Xin, professor with the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Policy and Management; and Denis Fred Simon, dean of the Lally School, among others. Jeffrey Schanz Named Alumni Relations Director
Jeffrey Schanz has been named director of alumni relations. Schanz, who has served as acting director of alumni relations during the past 13 months, will be responsible for planning, managing, executing, and evaluating all programs of the Office of Alumni Relations. As director, he also will serve as the executive director of the Rensselaer Alumni Association (RAA) Board of Directors. More
Orthopedic, dental, and other bone implants are becoming commonplace, but they are not yet trouble-free. John Brunski, professor of biomedical engineering, and co-researchers Jill Helms and Celine Colnot at UC San Francisco and Antonio Nanci at the University of Montreal have been awarded a new $1.9 million, four-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. The scientists are studying such implants to discover how weight loading influences blood supply, cell differentiation, and bone healing around these increasingly common devices. More
