Several Events to Mark Sept. 11 Tragedy
Rensselaer will mark the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, with several events, including the lowering of the United States flag at the corner of 15th Street and Sage Avenue at 8:46 a.m., a campuswide moment of silence at noon, and a panel discussion on Historic Memorials, Commemoration, and Remembrance beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Sage Lab Room 3303. An outdoor dinner reception, open to all, will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Hassan Quad.
President Jackson and Vice President for Student Life Eddie Knowles will deliver remarks at the flagpoles on 15th Street and Sage Avenue at 8:46 a.m., marking the time that the first plane struck the Twin Towers. Members of the ROTC will lower the U.S. flag to half-staff, along with other flags on campus.
At noon, a moment of silence will be held on campus.
At 4:30 p.m. a dinner reception will be held on the Hassan Quad. All are invited to attend. Following, a panel and discussion on Historic Memorials, Commemoration, and Remembrance will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Sage Lab Room 3303.
The program will include introductory remarks from President Jackson, followed by remarks by Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences John Harrington, who will speak on Irish famine memorials; Dean of Architecture Alan Balfour, who will talk about memorials in Berlin; Michael Halloran, professor emeritus of language, literature, and communication, will talk about the Saratoga Memorial Battlefield and other local memorials; and Carole Blair, professor of American studies at University of California, Davis, who will discuss plans for the World Trade Center site. 9/8/03

Call for Nominations : Founders Award of Excellence
Rensselaer's ninth annual Honors Convocation will be held Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 at 11 a.m. The event honors outstanding students and faculty for high academic achievements. Nominations are being accepted for the Founders Award of Excellence, the highest honor of the convocation ceremony. Established in 1994, the Founders Award honors students who embody qualities of creativity, discovery, leadership, and the values of pride and responsibility at Rensselaer. This year, up to 70 students from the Schools of Architecture, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Technology, and Science-approximately one percent of the student population-will be honored.
Nominations, which are due by Sept. 25, can be submitted by faculty, staff, and students. Nominations will be reviewed within each school and a final list of awardees for the Founders Award will be submitted to the Founders Award Committee. The Founders Awards will be presented at Honors Convocation Oct. 26 in the Alumni Sports and Recreation Center.
The Founders Award Committee is Gary Gabriele, vice provost/dean of undergraduate education; Tom Apple, vice provost/dean of graduate education; Lisa Trahan, dean of the first-year experience; Rick Hartt 70, managing director, Rensselaer Union; and Rebecca Danchak, acting associate dean for enrollment and student services, Rensselaer at Hartford.
