Accolades

Lynn DeNoia, professor of engineering and science at Rensselaer at Hartford, has received the “2002 Best Instructors Award” for her and a colleague’s tutorial Principles of Effective IT Management at NetWorld+Interop, the premier network education conference and trade show. The award was announced at the 2003 NetWorld+Interop conference in Las Vegas in May. DeNoia has led tutorials and workshops for the past several years at NetWorld+Interop. She teaches this highly rated information in her Rensselaer course Strategic IS Management. 9/8/03

Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer, will be honored by the Junior Museum of Troy for her contributions and support of a partnership between the Junior Museum and the Rensselaer community. Jackson will be honored at a gala celebration at the museum (105 8th Street) on Tuesday, Oct. 14, beginning at 6 p.m. Activities during the evening will include a live auction, “molecularium” and Lally planetarium shows, tours of the GE Animal Nursery, and featured highlights of the Hudson River Interpretive Center. The Rensselaer football team has been ranked 29th in the nation among Division III teams, according to Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette Pre-Season Top 40 Poll. The Engineers, who are led by 15th-year head coach Joe King, return 15 starters from a team that went 8-2 and played in the post-season for the third time in four years. The Engineers open the season on Saturday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Utica. The team makes its home debut on Saturday, Sept. 20, against Coast Guard in the Shotglass Trophy Game beginning at 1 p.m. at '86 Field. 9/8/03

In the Princeton Review’s “Best 351 College Rankings,” Rensselaer is ranked number one on a list titled “More to Do on Campus.” The rankings are based on students’ assessment of the surrounding city or town. 9/8/03

Joseph Flaherty, dean of the School of Science, received the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics Computational and Applied Science Award, at the U.S. National Congress of Computational Mechanics in Albuquerque. 9/2/03

William Luddy Jr., professor in the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford, was named chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Science and Technology’s E-commerce Division and vice chair of its International Policy Coordinating Committee, at the annual meeting of the ABA held in San Francisco in August. The ABA’s Section of Science and Technology focuses on a wide range of technological and scientific research issues that intersect with U.S. and international law. Its E-commerce Division examines a wide range of issues that include information security, e-privacy law, development of technical standards in e-commerce, and electronic payment systems. 9/2/03

Mark Nelson, assistant professor of management, has been named a fellow of the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) for the 2003-2004 term. ECAR, located in Boulder, Colo., promotes the creation and exchange of research related to the management, use, socialization, and impact of information technology in higher education. 9/2/03

Donald Siegel, professor and chair of economics, was named to the academic advisory board of the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies, an independent, nonprofit think tank designed to promote practical ways to foster competition in Israel and the Middle East. 9/2/03

Denis Simon, dean of the Lally School of Management and Technology, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Foundation. He is one of four U.S. representatives. The foundation implements policies and programs to help foster collaboration in science and technology between American and Israeli industry. Its efforts are currently focused on biotechnology, information technology, harmonization of standards/regulations, homeland security, and nanotechnology. 9/2/03

Rensselaer and the Sage Colleges have been named co-recipients of the Van Rensselaer Corporate Award by the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce. They are being recognized for their homeownership programs, which provide incentives for buying homes in and around the two institutions in Troy. The homeownership program is part of Rensselaer’s “communiversity” efforts. The Van Rensselaer Awards Dinner is Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Franklin Plaza Ballroom in Troy.
