Semiconductor Expert To Head Future Chips Constellation

   
 
Schubert to head Future Chips Constellation

E. Fred Schubert, a pioneering semiconductor researcher and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Boston University, has been appointed Senior Constellation Professor of the Future Chips Constellation at Rensselaer. His tenure begins this week.

"Dr. Schubert brings substantial research activity and an exciting and productive new research thrust that will expand Rensselaer's global reach and global impact," said Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson. More

Professor Begins Construction of Second ARCH Home in South Troy
Nearly 10 years after his first Affordable and Responsive Community Housing (ARCH) Program prototype was assembled, Walter Kroner broke ground on his second "erector set" house at the beginning of the summer. This time Kroner and administrators of the ARCH Program actually plan to sell the build-it-yourself home. More

A control room has been set up on campus to control and monitor the progress of a crystal growth experiment aboard the International Space Station. The control room is in Room 5112 of the Low Center for Industrial Innovation. Observing is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More

In the quest to create a machine that will outsmart the most intelligent human, Selmer Bringsjord has developed the first-known robot capable of passing part of a standard IQ test. Bringsjord is director of the Rensselaer Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning Lab and is professor and chair of the Department of Cognitive Science

Office of Technology Commercialization Reports Increased Activity
Intellectual property and technology commercialization are important elements of the Rensselaer Plan. In order to better serve the Rensselaer faculty, staff, students, and alumni, the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) has received a substantial grant, increased its staff, doubled its invention disclosures and commercialization deals, and has created robust networking and outreach programs. The OTC now reports directly to the President's Office. More

Student Sprint Car Racer Snatches Her Third Win of the Year
Rensselaer undergrad Erin Crocker '03 outmaneuvered her fellow drivers and picked up her third professional racing victory of the season in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends, family, and supporters at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y. Aug. 23. More

Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day
Rensselaer held a Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day Aug. 23 at the Doris B. Robison Softball Field (next to the Armory). Employees enjoyed a barbecue lunch, music, games, giveaways, and more. See photos


Downtown Troy Welcome Fest
Rensselaer also hosted a "Welcome Festival" on Aug. 23 in Troy's Monument Square. Coordinated by the Office of the First Year Experience and Residence Life, the "communiversity" event helped to familiarize students, faculty, and staff with downtown business and culture. Entertainment was provided by Rensselaer music groups the Rusty Pipes and Rensselyrics, along with the Canada-based Nylons. Freshmen also enjoyed a welcome dinner in Riverfront Park.
