New Bleachers on '86 Field To Be Unveiled Nov.
2
As
part of the overall effort to upgrade and improve campus facilities,
the Institute has constructed permanent bleachers on the '86 Field.
Designed to accommodate nearly 1,000 fans, the new bleachers offer
better views of the playing field, access for the disabled, and
a press box for media and game personnel.
Campus is invited to a festive Family Weekend
celebration of the new facility on Saturday, Nov. 2, during halftime
of the Rensselaer vs. St. John Fisher football game. Kickoff for
that game is 1 p.m.
As
part of the celebration, the Athletics Department is sponsoring
school spirit contests for students in Greek chapters and residence
halls. Prizes of $500 and $300 will be awarded to the winners'
local charity of choice. For full details, e-mail Greeklife@rpi.edu
or Res_Life @rpi.edu
The new aluminum bleachers meet all the latest
building codes and are supported by a galvanized steel understructure,
similar to the bleachers at Harkness Field. Elevated seating will
provide even those fans in the first few rows with a better view
of the action on the field. The bleachers feature a ramp for handicapped
accessibility and 10 spaces for wheelchair seating. Additionally,
the bleachers will be topped by a large press box centered at
the 50-yard line.
Ken
Ralph, director of athletics, says these improvements underscore
the Institute's commitment to student life and athletics.
"Athletics are a key component of student
life on Rensselaer's campus," said Ralph. "We have outstanding
student athletes, fans, and community members who support sporting
events. I am happy to be able to unveil these wonderful improvements
that we hope will make everyone more comfortable as they enjoy
our home football games."
