As director of the SUMBA program, Xu created the
first MBA program especially for Chinese students in the U.S.
More than 200 students have graduated with a Rensselaer MBA or
M.S. degree since 1998.
Before joining Rensselaer, Xu was professor and chairman of the
MBA planning committee at the College of West Virginia (1992-1995),
a visiting professor at the Katz Graduate School of Business of
University of Pittsburgh (1989-1992), and a visiting professor
at Moorhead State University. His research interests included
the "analytic hierarchy process," a method of multiple
criteria decision-making and categorical data analysis. He was
widely published in the decision sciences field, including four
books in Chinese and more than 20 articles in English.
"We remain shocked and saddened by the untimely
passing of Professor Xu Shubo," said Denis Fred Simon, dean
of the Lally School. "He was a key figure in helping to build
Rensselaer's broad-based academic relationships with China. He
was a pioneer in terms of his work to establish the Sino-US MBA
Program and in deepening the links between the Rensselaer faculty
and their counterparts across many Chinese universities and think
tanks. We are sad to have him leave us so early in his life, obviously
before all his work was completed."
Friends, colleagues, and students of the Lally
School will hold a memorial service for Professor Xu on Wednesday,
Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel and Cultural Center. All are
invited to attend.
