New Student Publication Hits the Streets
Statler and Waldorf, Rensselaer's newest student-run literary magazine, began publication in late fall 2001.

With a primary mission to fill the void left by The Gorgon in 1999, the editorial team of Mark Anderson '02, William Bobrowski '02, S. Eliza Bonner '02, and Chris Gill '02 decided last October to start a literary periodical to serve the campus community.

Although its name comes from the two hecklers on The Muppet Show, Editor-in-Chief Gill said, "As things were progressing, we came to a point and said, 'maybe this isn't as wacky as it seems.' "

An overwhelming sentiment among the founders is that the campus needed another media voice. That need drove them to invest time into the publication plans, said Gill.

2002 United Way Campaign Kicks Off
The 2002 United Way Campaign kicked off at Rensselaer's Troy campus on Sept. 27 and will run through Oct. 16.

Last year, with a total of over $114,000, Rensselaer was ranked eighth in the region for corporate and employee contributions to the United Way of Northeastern New York. In per capita giving, Rensselaer was among the top 10 corporations in this region.
The President's Cabinet has selected a team of employees who represent each administrative and academic unit to manage the campaign. Volunteers from each campus unit will contact faculty and staff for contributions.

All employees will receive a pledge card and a brochure that lists local agencies supported by the Northeastern New York Division of United Way. The cards and donations are to be returned to the volunteer representing the donor's department.

Committee coordinators are Cynthia McIntyre, Rensselaer's chief of staff; Cindy Novak from the Provost's Office; Barbara Stubblebine from the School of Architecture, and Lu Uber from the Office of the Vice President for Research. 9/30/02

Kagan Art Featured at Rice Gallery
Recent shadow sculpture by Professor Larry Kagan will be on exhibit through Nov. 17, as part of a three-person show at The Rice Gallery at the Albany Institute of History and Art, located at 125 Washington Ave., Albany. Kagan says that the three pieces "were built at a time when Palestinians were blowing themselves and others up on a regular basis, and are in some way a meditation on what it is like to be talking to someone and seeing him disintegrate before your very eyes." 9/16/02
