community to respond to the needs of people who are gay, lesbian,
bisexual, transgendered, or who question their sexual orientation

to noon and preregistration is required. Rensselaer faculty, staff, and students who complete
the training will receive a "Safe Zone" sign to hang in
their office or room. A person displaying this symbol indicates his
or her commitment to be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy.
More than 125 people have already received the training. Coffee and bagels will be provided. Participation is limited to 25 people. To register or for more information, contact Lisa Amos at amosl@rpi.edu or ext. 6147. 3/3/03
Groundhog Job Shadow Day March 11 On Tuesday, March 11, approximately 25 11th and 12th
grade students from Waterford-Halfmoon High School will "shadow"
Rensselaer employees as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2003. The
goal of this event is to provide students with an up-close look at
what a "real job" is like and how the skills they learn
in school are put to use in the workplace. The student participants will be welcomed
to campus by Curtis Powell, vice president of human resources. "We
are very excited to provide them an opportunity to see the link between
what they are learning now in school and careers that lie ahead of
them." According to a study by the Kravis Leadership Institute
in Southern California, students who job shadow are more likely to
finish high school and obtain a four-year degree. Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2003 is being made possible
by a consortium of organizations interested in promoting volunteerism
and school-to-work training for young people. Participating organizations
include Junior Achievement, America's Promise, and the United States
Department of Labor. To learn more about the March 11 event, contact Beverly Pruitt, director of employee relations and development, at pruitb@rpi.edu or ext. 6038. For more on Groundhog Job Shadow Day, visit the Web site at www.jobshadow.org. 2/24/03
