Dale Masten, assistant to the dean of architecture, has received
the 2003 Pillars of Rensselaer Award, the highest honor Rensselaer
gives to a staff member. The award was presented at the 31st
Annual Service Recognition & Retirement Dinner held June
27 at The Desmond in Albany. The Pillars Award is presented
annually to a staff member who understands the Institute's
mission and history, has been a role model for other employees,
has showed concern for students and their welfare, has added
to the human dimension of the school, and who has played an
active role in his or her home community.
Charles Carletta, secretary and general counsel of the
Institute, quoted from several of the nominations received
for Masten: “[Masten] is a role model of grace under
pressure, maintaining focus and composure during those times
when the needs of faculty, students, and staff coalesce
simultaneously. In a position that often demands tough decisions,
[Masten] is fair, honest, patient, accommodating, and respectful.”
“[Masten] is demanding, yet fair,
and leads by example with a strong work ethic and commitment
to excellence as it supports Rensselaer’s vision and
values. A pillar is an individual entity that lends its
strength and character to support a larger structure. Its
significance should not be underestimated, as it is often
through the efforts of one individual that the group can
succeed, enabling us to make a difference in our lives,
our university, our communities and our world. [Masten]
is one of these individuals.”
Masten, who joined Rensselaer in 1991,
was cited for her work in planning a 20th Roman Studies
Anniversary set of events “that made history here,
and developed a great allegiance by many of our alumni to
our future efforts in international programs.” She
also was praised for her volunteer participation in many
campus events and committees, including the Commencement
steering committee, United Way committee, the American Heart
Association, Rensselaer’s 125th Anniversary celebration,
and Space Week.
In 1993, Carl Westerdahl, former dean of
students and director of alumni relations, provided the
funding to establish the Pillars of Rensselaer Award to
honor long-term staff members. The annual award consists
of a gift of $500 and a sterling silver pin by Tiffany &
Co. The winner's name also is inscribed on the base of a
Tiffany crystal award that is permanently displayed in the
President's Suite in the Troy Building.
The Pillars are regularly called upon by the president to
represent the staff in key decisions. They also help to
plan staff recognition and memorial events.
